Nitrous oxide conscious sedation

A calmer dental experience for children—while they remain awake and responsive.

Nitrous oxide mixed with oxygen can reduce anxiety and make dental treatment feel more manageable for suitable children. It has a long history in paediatric dentistry and, when carefully selected, administered and monitored, is considered a highly safe and effective form of minimal sedation.

Understanding the treatment

Relaxation without putting your child to sleep.

The child breathes the gas through a soft nasal hood and usually begins to feel calmer within a few minutes. They remain conscious, can respond to instructions and continue breathing on their own.

The effect is adjusted gradually for the individual child. At the end of treatment, nitrous oxide is stopped and oxygen is given. Recovery is generally rapid, allowing most children to leave the clinic without the prolonged drowsiness associated with deeper sedation.

Nitrous oxide helps with anxiety and comfort, but it does not always replace local anaesthetic. A numbing injection may still be needed for fillings, extractions or other procedures.

Why it may help

Gentle, adjustable and fast to wear off.

01

Reduces anxiety

Helps many children feel less fearful and more able to cope with sounds, sensations and treatment.

02

Remains conscious

Your child stays awake, breathes independently and can communicate with the dental team.

03

Titrated gradually

The concentration can be adjusted step by step according to the child’s response and the clinical procedure.

04

Rapid recovery

The calming effect begins quickly and usually clears quickly after breathing oxygen at the end of treatment.

Suitability

Who may benefit from nitrous oxide?

Suitability depends on the child’s age, ability to accept the nasal hood, medical history and the treatment required.

Common indications

  • Mild to moderate dental anxiety or fear
  • A sensitive gag reflex
  • Difficulty tolerating longer appointments
  • Previous unpleasant dental experiences
  • Children who need help remaining relaxed and cooperative
  • Selected patients with additional healthcare needs

When it may not be suitable

  • Blocked nose, active cold or difficulty breathing through the nose
  • A child unable or unwilling to accept the nasal hood
  • Certain respiratory, middle-ear or sinus conditions
  • Some medical conditions affecting vitamin B12 or folate metabolism
  • Recent relevant surgery or significant medical concerns
  • When deeper sedation or general anaesthesia is more appropriate

What to expect

Calm preparation, continuous observation and a gentle recovery.

  1. 01

    Assessment

We review medical history, nasal breathing, anxiety level, communication and the planned procedure.

  2. 02

    Introduce the nasal hood

The child becomes familiar with the small hood and is encouraged to breathe normally through the nose.

  3. 03

    Titrate slowly

Oxygen is started first, then nitrous oxide is increased gradually while comfort and response are observed.

  4. 04

    Treat and monitor

The child remains responsive while the dental team monitors breathing, colour, comfort and level of consciousness.

  5. 05

    Oxygen and recovery

Nitrous oxide is stopped and oxygen is given before the child is assessed for discharge.

Accutron nitrous oxide and oxygen delivery

Artizen Dental uses an Accutron system designed for controlled delivery of nitrous oxide and oxygen. The equipment allows the dental team to adjust the mixture and total flow while a scavenging circuit helps manage exhaled gas. Child-sized nasal hoods support fit and comfort.

Personalised dental care

Start with an assessment—not an assumption.

Nitrous oxide is not right for every child or every procedure. We assess your child’s health, anxiety, nasal breathing and treatment needs before recommending it.
